A lot of people debate of what is the best computer operating system to use. (I mean for personal use) Why use Linux when there is Windows and Mac? We are given the chance to pick our choice of operating system but other peepz out there like me would still prefer to use Linux than anything else. Of all the Linux distros, Ubuntu is one of my most wanted choices simply because of its powerful environment. Actually it is one of the most user-friendly and easy to use Linux distribution, much way better than Windows of course.
Let’s make a brief discussion of Ubuntu and its environment. What is Ubuntu? Ubuntu is a computer operating system based on Debian Linux distribution and a member of the Unix family. Unix is one of the oldest types of operating systems that was first developed in the 1960s. Although Ubuntu is mostly used for desktops, netbooks and server editions also exist. It is said that Ubuntu is one of the most popular Linux distros that is widely used today. It is distributed as free and open source software. Ubuntu supports LTS (long term support) wherein the latest is Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx). On the other hand, the latest stable release of Ubuntu is 11.04, also called as “Natty Narwhal”.
So why use Ubuntu or any other Linux distros?
- It is absolutely FREE and will forever remain free.
- No need to buy a high-end computer just for the basic needs.

- You do not need to pay for licensing fees.
- Tweak your desktop/laptop just the way you want. You can even make it look like Windows or Mac.
- Standard installation time for Ubuntu is just less than 20 minutes. Isn’t it quick?
- You can even use your old computer to run Ubuntu.
- Bunch of applications like pre-installed browser, office suite, games, etc. in just one CD/DVD.
